2022 Grammy Awards
The 2022 Grammy Awards were held at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas and live-streamed on CBS. Officially the 64th Grammy Awards, the recordings released by artists between September 1, 2020, and September 30, 2021, are recognized.
Trevor Noah hosted the ceremony for the second year in a row and opened the broadcast opened with “Vegas Baby.” “Let’s get straight into it” as he introduced Bruno Mars and Anderson Paak of Silk Sonic who performed, 777.
Walking through the seated audience Trevor said, “Better late than never,” because the Grammy ceremony was postponed this year and moved to Vegas due to Covid. Trevor gave a shout-out to several artists seated at tables nominated for a Grammy. He then called Olivia Rodrigo to the stage, and she performed Drivers License.
Trevor immediately threw to Reggaeton star J Balvin and Maria Becerra for a live performance of Balvin’s latest hit, Jose.
Trevor said the Grammys ceremony has never been held in Vegas before, “Vegas for the first time ever” as he introduced Quest Love to announce the nominees for Song of the Year. The Grammy went to Leave the Door Open by Silk Sonic, Bruno Mars, Brandon Anderson, Christopher Brody Brown, and Dernst Emile II. Bruno began dancing in the audience and onto the stage. “I want to say thank you to everybody who helped us with this album. Thank you so much.”
Trevor introduced the next performer, BTS. One member came down from the ceiling on a rope as the rest of the group were planted in the audience. They got up and delivered a major stage performance of Let Go.
Cuban singer, pianist, and composer Aymée Nuviola took the show to the break with Sin Salsa No Hay Paraíso.
Trevor then introduced Lil Nas X who performed Montero, and Industry Baby with Jack Harlow.
The next category was Best Country Album, and the Grammy went to Starting Over by Chris Stapleton.
Trevor said I don’t have to tell you that the pandemic has been hard on everybody. He said they wanted to celebrate the crews that make tours and stage performances happen just before Billy Eilish took the stage and sang Listen Before I Go and Happier Than Ever.
Trevor joined Silk Sonic in the audience and razzed Bruno as he introduced Dua Lipa and Megan Thee Stallion to announce the nominees for Best New Artist. The Grammy went to Olivia Rodrigo. “This is my biggest dream come true. Thank you very much.”
Bonnie Raitt and Joni Mitchell got a standing ovation to introduce Brandi Carlie who performed Right on Time.
The next performance came from Nas. Nas won the Grammy for Best Rap Album in 2021. He performed One Mic and Rare.
Ludacris took the stage to present the Grammy for Best Rap Performance. The Grammy went to Family Ties Baby Keem Featuring Kendrick Lamar. “I just want to say thank you to my support system.” He thanked is family and team. “Thank you, everybody. It’s a dream.”
The next performer was Chris Stapleton. He belted out his hit, Cold. He got a standing ovation.
Trevor then introduced the performance by the Gospel group, Maverick City Music. They received four Grammy nominations and won their first trophy.
Trevor addressed Ukraine and introduced a recorded message from President Zenski pleading the conditions of war in Ukraine. John Legend followed with a moving performance of Free. A standing ovation followed.
Trevor joined BTS in the audience. “You’re all here in person. How do you feel?” They said great, and they learned English by watching Friends. Trevor then introduced Tony Bennet and Lady Gaga. Tony Bennett is no longer performing but sent a video introduction for Gaga. She started with Love for Sale and followed with Do I Love You.
Billy Porter wore hot pink to introduce the nominees for Best R&B Album. The Grammy went to Heaux Tales by Jazimine Sullivan. “I’m so grateful to be up here.” “Shout out to all Black women who are just living their lives.” She thanked her parents, friends, and fans.
Bluegrass artist Billy Strings performed into and back from the commercial break.
Jared Leto announced the nominees for the Best Pop Vocal Album. The Grammy went to Sour by Olivia Rodrigo. She had a great night. She thanked her parents “This is for you guys and because of you guys. Thank you.”
Trevor said the Foo Fighters had several Grammy nominations and would have performed but they are suffering the loss of their beloved member Taylor Hawkins. Taylor’s memory was the beginning of the In Memoriam segment.
Jon Batiste performed next. He was the most nominated artist this year with 11 nominations and won at least five 2022 Grammys. He performed Freedom. He took it to the audience and got a lengthy ovation. Justin Bieber took the stage with Daniel Cesar and Giveon. The trio performed their hit single, Peaches. The production tried to block out some of the lyrics that were unairable. Some got through though.
Avril Lavigne presented the nominees for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The Grammy went to Doja Cat featuring SZA for Kiss Me More. Doja Cat said, “I have never taken such a fast piss in my whole life.” She was a little late to the stage. She began to cry, “It’s a big deal.” “Thank you, everybody. Be safe, take care.”
H.E.R. was a Grammy winner and performed Damage. Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis joined her, and she performed I Can’t Breathe. Lenny Kravitz joined her for Are You Gonna Go My Way. Killed it.
Keith Urban presented the Record of the Year Award. The Grammy went to Leave the Door Open Silk Sonic Dernst “D’Mile” Emile II and Bruno Mars. “In the industry, we call that a clean sweep.”
With eight Grammy Awards and a 2022 Grammy Award, Carrie Underwood performed Ghost Story.
Lenny Kravitz did the honors for Album of the Year. The Grammy went to We Are Jon Batiste. “I love music. I’ve been playing since a was a little boy.” “Be you.”
Trevor introduced the performance of Dead Man’s Curve by Brothers Osborne to close the show.
