The 2020 NAACP Image Awards were broadcast live from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in California on BET. It’s the 51st NAACP Image Awards and Anthony Anderson hosted again. His seventh consecutive year. The audience gave him a standing ovation right off the top.

“This is a night of celebration and a show to honor Black Excellence.”

He took a few minutes to plug his show and did so several times, “Watch black-ish Tuesday night at 9:30.” black-ish won a 2020 Image and so did Anthony.

Anthony mentioned that NAACP stands for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. He asked why they don’t take out the word ‘colored’ and he joked that he was told it was, “Too soon.”

“How great a movie was HARRIET?” Anthony praised the movie and Cynthia Erivo before naming all the Democratic nominees and how they represent all shades of white.

He also mentioned that the show gives them a chance to pay tribute to the NAACP. “We truly have come so far.”

The first presenter was Tiffany Haddish. She announced the nominees for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. The 2020 NAACP Image Award went to Marsai Martin for Little. Marsai received 12 nominations and this was her first win in this category. She ended her acceptance speech with, “Thank you to all the beautiful Black girls out there who inspire me every day.”

Tamron Hall was the next presenter. She introduced Jill Scott who performed Do You Remember.

The next category was Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. The 2020 NAACP Image Award went to Jamie Foxx for Just Mercy. This was his 13th nomination and fifth win. He said, “It’s always nice to get awards from Black people because we are so talented.” He thanked Warner bros. and Michael B. Jordan. They played music to move him along, but he continued to praise Michael B. Jordon, “I love you man and I thank you, man.” And he teased him about throwing the lead character in Black Panther off the cliff.

Chairman of the NAACP, Leon W. Russell took the stage “We all have our own personal heroes.” “The hero is the man we honor tonight, Congressman John Lewis.” The Chairman’s Award went to John Lewis for a lifetime of fighting for the civil rights of Black people. At eighty years old he is truly an icon of the Civil Rights Movement.

The next category was Outstanding Actress in a Comedy Series and the 2020 NAACP Image Award went to Tracey Ellis Ross for black-ish. Her 18th nomination and her ninth win. This was her sixth win in this category. She thanked black-ish, read her speech off her cell phone and named all the women in her category. The music played but she ended her speech when she was ready.

Angela Basset won the 2020 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Drama Series for 9-1-1. Her 12th Image Award win.

The In Memoriam segment followed reminding us of all the talented and significant people we lost over the past years.

The 2020 NAACP Image Award for Outstanding Actress in a Motion Picture went to Lupita Nyong’o for Us. She was not at the ceremony.

Rihanna, a global performer, fashion icon, business entrepreneur and philanthropist received the honor of the 2020 NAACP President’s Award. Her video tribute showed how much work Rihanna is doing around the world. Rihanna received a standing ovation and she thanked the NAACP, everyone in the room and everyone watching. ‘We can only fix this world together.” “We can’t let the de-sensitivity sink in.” “When we are marching and protesting tell your friends to pull up.” “I am honored. Imagine what we can do together. Thank you for this honor.”

Skip Marley and H.E.R. performed a melody of songs for the 2020 NAACP Image Awards, including Slow Down and Turn Your Lights Down Low.

Octavia Spencer was the next presenter for Outstanding Actor in a Motion Picture. The 2020 NAACP Image Award went to Michael B. Jordan for Just Mercy. His 10th nomination and 5th win. He thanked the NAACP and said this goes to people who have been wrongfully convicted. He thanked Warner bros., his producers and said he will never stop fighting.

Morgan Freeman came out and the crowd went crazy. He said, “Alright, alright, alright.” “I appreciate the love.” He announced the nominees for Outstanding Motion Picture and the 2020 Image Award went to Just Mercy. Crusading attorney Bryan Stevenson spoke for the film and was so honored for the win.“This is for the thousands of people in jail across the country.” He said this system works, “If you’re rich and guilty rather than poor and innocent.” And he ended his speech telling everyone to keep fighting.

Janelle Monáe introduced the Entertainer of the Year Award and the honor went to Lizzo. This was her 2nd nomination and first win. “Hello, beautiful Black people.” She said she got to meet all of her heroes tonight in this room.” She shouted out to all the big Black girls she brings on the stage with her. “This is just a reminder of all the incredible things we can do. Let’s go! Let’s go!”
