2020 Golden Globe Awards
The 2020 Golden Globe Awards allowed Ricky Gervais to take the hosting reins for the fifth time, and he made off-the-rails comments many times over the course of the evening.
The 2020 Golden Globes is the 77th Golden Globe Awards and honors the best in film and television. It was broadcasted live on NBC from The Beverly Hilton in Beverly Hills.
The Hollywood Foreign Press Association, HFPA, decide the winners of The Golden Globes. HFPA consists of 90 journalists from around the world and none of those members vote for the Academy Awards, so The Golden Globes and the Oscars have no overlap between the voting bodies.
Ricky Gervais opened the 2020 Golden Globe Awards with his spicy monologue. “Hello and welcome to the 77th Golden Globe Awards.” You will be pleased to know that this is the last time I will host these awards. He then said he was kidding.
“Remember they’re just jokes. We’ll all going to die soon and there is no sequel.”
He called out Al Pacino and Robert De Niro in the audience for a little applause. He made a joke about Ronan Farrow and said he’s coming for you. The joke fell flat.
Ricky Gervais followed with this outrageous comment, “Many talent people of color were snubbed. There’s nothing we can do about it the foreign press are racists.”
He made a joke about Jeffrey Epstein that didn’t go over well either.
Ricky said the “The Irishman was great.” Long, but great. He called James Corbin a fat pussy and then added, “He was also in CATS.” He called the movie CATS the worst thing that has happened to cats since dogs.
He really went too far with a joke about Judi Dench licking something inappropriate. It was in poor taste. He said he didn’t care because it’s the last time he’s hosting.
He told the actors to give their acceptance speech and don’t give out any political advice because they didn’t know anything about real life and have little education.
After all of those gems from Ricky, Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon were the first presenters.
They announced the nominees for the first two awards. The 2020 Golden Globe Award for Best Actor in a TV Series or Comedy went to Ramy Youssef for Ramy.
The Best Actor in a Miniseries or Television Film went to Russell Crowe for The Loudest Voice. Russell couldn’t be there because of the brush fires in Australia. Jennifer Aniston read his acceptance speech that concentrated the effects of global warm.
Elton John was one of the next presenters and received a rousing standing ovation. Elton had to remove his sunglasses to get through the introduction of a clip from Rocketman.
The next category was Best Supporting Actor for a Series, Miniseries or Television Film and the 2020 Golden Globe Award went to Stellan Skarsgard for Chernobyl.
• The 2020 Golden Globe Award for Best TV Series or Drama went to Succession.
• The Best Actress in a TV Series or Comedy went to Phoebe Waller-Bridge for Fleabag.
• Best Foreign Language Film went to Parasite.
Kate McKinnon had the honor of introducing Ellen DeGeneres who received the second-ever Carole Burnett Award. Kate said she’s gay and that it was a scary thing to discover about herself. Kate thanked Ellen for risking her entire career and how she suffered greatly for telling her truth. Kate thanked Ellen for giving her a shot at a good life.
Ellen was seated in the audience with Carole Burnett and her wife Portia de Rossi before she headed to the stage to accept the award.
Ellen first sent her love to Australia due to the horrible fires. She thanked Kate for her wonderful introduction, and she thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press. She joked that she liked this award because she knew she was going to win. She joked about going on and on with her speech and said she was going to keep it quick, but of course she didn’t. She rambled on about her life and said when she got her talk show she was able to be herself. She thanked her husband Mark and two children, of which she has neither, but she didn’t seem to thank her wife Portia.
Ellen then spoke about Carole Burnett and her wonderful career and Ellen joked that she always expected Carole to look at her one day and say, “It’s OK, I’m gay too.”
Ellen ended her speech stating she was grateful that her show inspires people and she thanked everyone so much.
• The next category was Best Actor in a TV Series or Drama and the 2020 Golden Globe Award went to Brian Cox for Succession.
• The Best Screenplay Golden Globe Award went to Quentin Tarantino for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
• The 2020 Golden Globe for the Best Animated Motion Picture went to Missing Link.
Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio took the stage together to major applause. They introduced a clip from their Quentin Tarantino movie Once Upon A Time In Hollywood.
Gwyneth Paltrow followed to present the nominees for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, and the 2020 Golden Globe Award went to Laura Dern for Marriage Story.
The 2020 Golden Globe Award for Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy went to Fleabag. A great night for Phoebe Waller-Bridge. She thanked everyone for supporting the show, and thanked Obama for putting the show on his list. She then said, “As you know, he’s always been on mine.”
Elton John won Best Original Song Golden Globe for I’m Gonna Love Me Again from Rocketman.
Best Supporting Actress in a Series, Limited Series or Television Film went to Patricia Arquette for The Act. In her acceptance speech she mentioned the president’s threats and the crisis he has caused and encouraged people to vote.
Olivia Colman won the 2020 Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a TV Series or Drama for The Crown.
Charlize Theron introduced the honors for Tom Hanks. “Tom gave me one of my first rolls.” Charlize said Tom gave her a second chance when she was tanking an audition. “He just makes the world a better place.”
The video walk-through of Tom’s career was a string of classic block-buster movies. Tom Hanks is truly a national treasure and the winner of the 2020 Golden Globe Cecil B. DeMille Award. The room went wild cheering for Tom during a standing ovation.
Tom got choked up when he mentioned his family, wife Rita Wilson and their children sitting in the audience. “I can’t tell you how much your love means to me.”
He continued for quite a while rambling about the industry. He said it’s his cold that made him go on and on. He ended with, “I have checked the gate; the gate is good” and he left the stage.

The 2020 Golden Globe Award for Best Director went to Sam Mendes for 1917. He gave major props to Martin Scorsese during his acceptance speech by saying, “There is not one director in this room that is not in the shadow of Martin Scorsese.”
Cate Blanchet mentioned the bush fires in Australia and did a special call out to the volunteer fire fighters battling the blaze. Cate introduced a clip of Joker which was nominated for four Golden Globes.
The 2020 Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie went to Michelle Williams for Fosse/Verdon. Michelle based her speech on the right to choose and encouraged women to vote in their own self-interest, “It’s what men have been doing for years.”

• Wesley Snipes hasn’t been seen for a while but introduced a clip of Dolemite Is My Name.
• Best Original Score went Joker.
The 2020 Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture went to Brad Pit for Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. He thanked Quentin Tarantino and Leonardo DiCaprio and said there are so many names to mention and he proceeded to mention as many as he could. “And I want to say hi to my folks, hey!” He said he didn’t want to bring anyone to the awards because it would be said that they were dating, and it would just be awkward.
Brad Pitt Wins Best Supporting Actor – 2020 Golden Globes
Brad Pitt accepts the award for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture at the 77th Annual Golden Globe Awards.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy went to Taron Egerton for Rocketman.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy went to Awkwafina for The Farewell. Awkwafina, whose real name is Nora Lum, is the first Asian woman to win the Best Actress Golden Globe.

Will Ferrell and Pierce Brosnan introduced the nominees for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy. The 2020 Golden Globe Award went to Once Upon A Time In Hollywood. Quentin took home another one.
Glenn Close introduced the nominees for Best Actor in a Motion Picture or Drama and the 2020 Golden Globe Award went to Joaquin Phoenix for Joker. Joaquin said quite a few things that were censored by the broadcast. He was the first person played off the stage by music. “I am so grateful for this night to all of you.
Best Actress in a Motion Picture or Drama went to Renee Zellweger for Judy. Renee was the next winner who was played off the set by music.
After Renee’s speech, Ricky came back and said, “Kill me, we’re nearly done.” He then added a Harvey Weinstein joke that didn’t go over well.
The 2020 Golden Globe for Best Picture went to 1917. Sam Mendez took home another one.
Ricky Gervais ended the show with, “Get drunk, take your drugs and f___k off!.” What a night.
