Straight Outta Compton
Straight Outta Compton hits theaters tonight! This highly anticipated biopic on the rise and eventual breakup of the gangster rap group NWA – Niggaz Wit Attitudes is already getting great reviews.
Eazy-E, Ice Cube, Dr. Dre, DJ Yella and MC Ren have brought their story of triumph over poverty, unemployment, and violence to the big screen.
When I relocated from Boston to Hollywood in the early 1990s to launch BET’s West Coast programming with Live From LA with Tanya Hart, NWA was among my first interviews. Ice Cube and Eazy-E even sampled the interview and included it in their 1992 release called The Predator.
And when the Rodney King riots in South Central LA broke out after the acquittal of the policemen that beat him, Eazy-E called me to have him and others appear on my show to talk about what was really going on in the streets.
We go way back, so I am more than excited that their story is being told, and told by them.
Their first album was NWA and the Posse in 1987, but it was their 1988 album Straight Outta Compton that is credited with giving birth to West Coast gangsta rap.

Ice Cube is played by his son O’Shea Jackson Jr. in this hardcore first-person portrayal of life as they knew it. Straight Outta Compton is expected to be number one at the box office this weekend. It’s projected to pass the $40 million range. I sat down with Ice Cube and DJ Yella to talk about the movie.
