Oscars 90th – The Shape of Water Wins Big
Oscars 90th Annual Academy Awards opened with a retro black and white video effect making things look like years ago but using today’s nominated stars. It was a cute effect and Jimmy Kimmel played the role of the announcer. He mentioned Meryl Streep’s 21 Oscar nominations as she sat in the audience, he also called out Gary Oldman and Lupita Nyong’o before coming on stage and welcomed the audience and viewers to Oscars 90th live from the Dolby Theatre, Los Angeles.
His first joke was about last years gaffe when the wrong winner was announced and said, “This year when you hear your name called don’t get up right away.”
Oscars 90 Years of Dreams
He mentioned this is Oscars 90th year and joked that the statue doesn’t have a penis, “We need more men like him in Hollywood.”
He mentioned Weinstein’s expulsion from the academy. He said, “We can’t let bad behavior slide anymore.” He congratulated the#Me Too and #Times’ Up movements and the changes being made.
He also congratulated the success of Black Panthers success and Wonder Woman, the first ever female nominee for cinematography, the first female director in eight years, and Jordan Peele for his history-making nominations.
He also congratulated The Shape of Water for its success and joked that this year will be remembered as “The year men screwed up so badly women started dating fish.”
Win a Jet Ski?
He told winners they can say whatever they want during acceptance speeches, but the show is long. He said, “The shortest speech will win a jet ski” and displayed it on stage like The Price is Right.
Oscars 90th first category was Actor in a Supporting Role was presented by Viola Davis. The Oscar went to Sam Rockwell for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. He congratulated the nominees in his category and he thanked his mom and dad for giving him a love of movies.
Oscar Screams “Get Out”
After Sam’s acceptance speech, Jimmy announced that 1:29 seconds was the time to beat to win the jet ski for the shortest speech. He also threatened those with a long speech with actor Lakeith Stanfield from Get Out. Lakeith demonstrated running out on the stage and screaming “get out” as he did in the movie to anyone who’s acceptance speech is too long.
The next category was Makeup and Hair Styling and the Oscars went to Darkest Hour.
Eva Marie Saint presented the award for Costume Design and said, “I just realized that I’m older than the Academy.” The Oscar went to Mark Brides for Phantom Thread.
Best Documentary Feature was next and the Oscar went to Icarus.
Taraji P. Henson announced Mary J. Blige’s performance of Mighty River from Mudbound. Mary made history with two nominations for Best Original Song and Best Supporting Actor in the same year.
The award for Sound Editing went to Dunkirk and the Oscar for Sound Mixing also went to Dunkirk.
Oscars Dreamers
Lupita Nyong’o and Kumail Nanjiani presented the category for Production Design and said they are dreamers in Hollywood and, “To all the Dreamers out there we stand with you.”
The Oscar for Production Design went to The Shape of Water.
Three of the artists, Gael García Bernal, Natalia Lafourcade and Miguel from the movie Coco performed Remember Me.
36 Seconds
36 seconds was the new time to beat for acceptance speeches. Jimmy was concerned that folks weren’t taking his jet ski offer seriously, so He sweetened the pot with a trip to Lake Havasu in Arizona.
Rita Moreno got a standing ovation as she danced out to the podium at 86 years of age. She presented the Oscar for Best Foreign Film and award went to A Fantastic Woman, Chile.
Mahershala Ali of Moonlight presented the Oscar for Best Actress in a Supporting Role. The Oscar went to Allison Janney for I, Tonya.
The Oscar for Best Animated Short went to Dear Basketball to Glen Keane and Kobe Bryant, and the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film went to Coco.
Sufjan Stevens performed Mystery of Love from Call Me by Your Name.
Gina Rodriguez and Tom Holland presented the award for Achievement in Visual Effects and the Oscar went to Blade Runner 2049.
Matthew McConaughey presented the award for Achievement in Film editing and the Oscar went to Dunkirk. Big night for Dunkirk too.
Jimmy Took Oscars Audience Across the Street
Jimmy told the audience that the show had pulled people off the street to see the movie A Wrinkle in Time in a theater across the street. He said the people didn’t know they were being spied on. Jimmy took a gang of A-listers from Oscars audience across the street to surprise the movie goers.
He gave the stars baskets of goodies to take to the moviegoers. The audience when nuts when they realized what was happening. Jimmy told them they were live and showed the Oscar audience and each waved at each other. Jimmy said the snacks are good for this audience because of the strong smell of marijuana in the theater.
Jimmy allowed an audience member to introduce Tiffany Haddish and Maya Rudolph. They presented two categories. First for Best Documentary Short Subject and the award went to Heaven is a Traffic Jam on the 405. And second for Best Live Action Short Film. The Oscar went to The Silent Child.
Dave Chapelle followed and said, “Thank you for the smattering of applause.”
He introduced Andra Day and Common who performed Stand Up For Something from Marshall.
Ashley Judd and Selma Hayek spoke for the Times’ Up Movement, diversity and equality.
Chadwick Boseman and Margot Robbie presented the award for Best Adapted Screenplay and the Oscar went to James Ivory for Call Me By Your Name. He received a standing ovation.
Peele Takes Best Original Screenplay
Nicole Kidman presented the award for Best Original Screenplay and the Oscar went to Jordan Peele for Get Out. He received a standing ovation too. Congratulations Jordan!
Jordan said, “I stopped writing this movie twenty times because I thought it was going to work.”
He thanked his wife, mother and the audience that went to the theater and said, “And to everybody who bought a ticket … thank you!”
Oscars 90th honored the men and women around the world who put their life on the line to serve in the armed forces and the movies that tell their stories.
Sandra Bullock was the next presenter. She asked them to lower the lights so she could look younger while she presented Achievement in Cinematography. The Oscar went to Rodger A. Deacon for Blade Runner 2049.
Zendaya introduced Keala Settle’s performance of This Is Me from The Greatest Showman.
Academy Award winner Christopher Walken also received a standing ovation when he came to present the nominees for Best Original Score. The Oscar went to Alexandre Desplat.
Lin-Manuel Miranda and Emily Blunt presented the award for Best Original Song and the Oscar went to Remember Me from Coco.
Tom Petty’s Room at the Top was the song performed for the In Memoriam segment. It’s always surprising how much talent is lost, some without even knowing.
Emma Stone presented the award for Best Directing and the Oscar went to Guillermo Del Toro for The Shape of Water.
Helen Mirren and Jane Fonda came out to a standing ovation. They presented the honors for Best Actor in a Leading Role and the Oscar went to Gary Oldman for Darkest Hour. He said, “Obviously I’m not going to win the ski.” And he told his mom, ” Put the kettle on I’m bringing Oscar.”
Jodie Foster and Jennifer Laurence presented the award for Best Actress in a Leading Role and the Oscar went to Frances McDormand for Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri.
She asked all the female actresses, writers, etc. to stand with her. She then said, “And they all have stories to tell.”
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway did return for a second go-round at announcing Best Picture. They received a standing ovation as well. Warren said, “Thank you, so nice seeing you again.” And Faye said, “Presenting is lovelier the second time around.”
The Oscar went to The Shape of Water.
Congratulations to The Shape of Water and Guillermo Del Toro for big wins at Oscars 90th Awards. And to Mark Bridges because he won Oscar for Costume Design and he also won the jet ski.
