Price gave the green light to produce the movie and for John Singleton to be the director. The movie went on to earn two Academy Award nominations for Best Director and Best Original Screenplay. Singleton became the first African American to earn a Best Director nomination as well as the youngest.

Singleton and Price remained friends and colleagues ever since and Frank was helping Singleton with his upcoming movie on Emmett Till.
