76 Golden Globe Awards

Andy Samberg and Sandra Oh hosted the 76 Golden Globe Awards live on NBC. It is the first awards show of the season and usually one of the liveliest.

The 76 Annual Golden Globe Awards broadcast live from the International Ballroom of the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Last years Globes was hosted by Seth Meyers, so Andy and Sandra kept the program in the NBC family.

Samberg said he and Sandra are considered the two nicest people in Hollywood these days and folks expect, “this is going to be a snooze.” So, they wanted to present a harder edge, and both pretended to tear into the audience. They picked out Spike Lee first and brutality called him a good director and Sandra viciously told Bradley Cooper he’s hot.

• Samberg did a shout-out to Michael B. Jordan and called him a snack
• Samberg told Jeff Bridges he wishes he was his dad
• Crazy Rich Asians made 2 hundred million dollars and Sandra said Asian moms everywhere were unimpressed

Sandra mentioned something called an Asian flush and had antacids delivered to a table in the audience. Several of the jokes went a bit flat and this was one of them.

They told Jim Carey to move from the movies section over to the TV section of the Globes audience. Jim went along with the gag and moved and asked if he could take his dinner with him. This went a bit flat too.

Bradly Cooper and Lady Gag were the first presenters. The first category was Best TV Comedy Actor, and the 76 Golden Globe Award went to Michael Douglas for The Kominsky Method. He tripped down the downstairs on his way to the stage and said thank you in several foreign languages when he arrived. He ended his acceptance speech with a thank you to his wife Catherine Zeta-Jones and his dad Kirk Douglas.

The cast of Black Panther were the next presenters and saluted “Wakanda Forever” before introducing a clip about the film. They also introduced the Best Animated Film category, and the Golden Globe went to Spiderman.

The next category was Best TV Drama Actor and the 76 Golden Globe went to Richard Madden for Bodyguard. His first Globe win and first nomination. The Americans won for Best Drama Series.

President of the Golden Globes, Meher Tatna made her presentation to the audience. She spoke for the Hollywood Foreign Press and said, “Our work as a journalist is under siege … and our work has never been more important.” She announced a program offering one million-dollar-grants to non-profit organizations who support journalists. “It is incumbent of all of us to protect freedom of speech.” “This is our stand to take.”

The 76 Golden Globe Award for Best TV Supporting Actor went Ben Whishaw for A Very English Scandal.

The Golden Globe Award for Best Actress in a Limited Series or TV Movie went to Patricia Arquette for Escape at Dannemora. Her second Globe win. Her speech was long and censored several times before being the first to be played off the stage by background music.

Instead of giving pizza to the audience or some other gag as their big award show moment, Andy and Sandra decided flu shots would work. They offered flu shots to the audience as their big show shocker during an awards show. This fell flat too.

The next presenter was Steve Carell, he introduced the Carol Burnett Life Time Achievement Award in Television and its first recipient, Carol Burnett. Among other accolades, Steve said she won 25 Emmy Awards and is the gold standard for comedy.

Steve said something outrageous during his introduction speech, because he was censored, and Carol Burnett looked shocked. When Carol Burnett took the stage, her standing ovation lasted nearly a minute.

She said, “Does this mean I get to accept it every year?” And she said she was so proud to be a part of a program that, “Half a century later still connects with people. “She also said, “Here’s to reruns and YouTube” that keep the Carol Burnett Show alive. Carol ended her speech with her famous closing phrase, “I’m so glad we had this time together.”

But before she ended she said she is committed to using 50- women on anything she produces, and she challenges anyone else in positions of power to do the same.

He thanked everyone involved in the film and he thanked his wife, his mother, his grandmother. “Thank you for your prayers. I needed each and every one of them.”

Maya proposed to Amy before announcing the award for Best Screenplay Motion Picture. The Golden Globe went to Peter Farrelly, Nick Vallelonga, and Brian Currie for Green Book. The proposal joke fell flat. When the winners got to the stage they apologized for taking so long and said, “We’re writers, they sat us by the kitchen.” Only one person got to speak. The program went to commercial as others went to the mike.

No go away.” When they tried to cut of his acceptance speech. He got it all out and said thank you before the show went to commercial.

This is such a great honor.” She continued and added, “We have to find personal fulfillment and follow our dreams.” The audience gave her a standing ovation.” And many in the audience were clearly moved. She also received a musical nudge to end her speech.
