71st Annual Golden Globe Awards
The ratings must have been sky-high for the 71st Annual Golden Globe Awards broadcast live from the Beverly Hilton on NBC. Anticipation about the telecast was very high. Not just because the Hollywood Foreign Press Association throws an awesome party year after year, but because Tina Fey and Amy Poehler hosted again, and we’re all wanted see what they’re going to do this time.
Well, the ladies did not disappoint, and the evening was full of surprise wins.
Matt Damon was their first victim as the ladies joked that there were much bigger stars than him in the room. They couldn’t pass on Meryl Streep, joking that there are still roles for Meryl Streep’s over 60.
They picked Jennifer Lawrence out of the audience and jokingly identified her as Amy Poehler nominated for Parks and Recreation.
They teased Julia Louis-Dreyfus for sitting in the film section instead of television, and Julia poked back by wearing sunglasses and pretended to smoke a cigar.
The big Joke of their monologue was on George Clooney, saying he would rather float in space and die in his role in Gravity rather than speed another minute with a woman his age. That one brought the house down.
They also joked about Matthew McConaughey’s weight loss for his film role and said losing weight like that is what Hollywood actresses call being in a movie.
The last joke was directed to Somalian actor Barkhad Abdi in Captain Phillips, as Tina told him, “I’m the captain now.”
The nights first presenters were Sandra Bullock and Tom Hanks announcing Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture, and the award went to Jennifer Lawrence for American Hustle. She was genuinely nervous and funny accepting her the award, and there was no falling up the stairs this time.
Jacqueline Bisset won Best Supporting Actress for Dancing on the Edge, and she looked like she was crying all the way to the stage. She was speechless for several moments at the mike and said she couldn’t believe it. They finally had to play her off the stage.
The next award was for Best Mini-Series or TV Movie, and the Globe went to Behind the Candelabra, followed by Best Actress in a Mini-Series or TV Movie. After another very long walk to the stage, the award went to Elisabeth Moss for Top of the Lake.
The next Globe for Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama went to Bryan Cranston for Breaking Bad. This win was almost expected for him in this role, and Breaking Bad also took the Golden Globe for the Best TV Series, Drama.
Kate Beckinsale, Usher, and Sean Combs announced the winner of the Best Original Score for a Motion Picture, and the award went to Alex Ebert for All is Lost. He was also lost for words but got through his limited speech before he was played of the stage.
This trio also announced the award for Best Original Sound for a Motion Picture, and the Globe went to Bono for Ordinary Love in the film Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom.
The award for Best Supporting Actor in a TV Series or Miniseries or TV Movie went to Angelina’s Dad, Jon Voight for Ray Donovan. He was another winner that was lost for words and had to be played off the stage.
Robert Downey Jr. announced the award for Best Actress in A Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy, and the winner was Amy Adams for American Hustle. She was also played off stage, but not before she got a little emotional when mentioning her young daughter and telling her she loved her.
Kevin Bacon and Kyra Sedgwick introduced their daughter, and Tina Fey brought out Amy pretending to be Tina’s son before they announced the winner of the next Golden Globe for Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama.
The award went to the Robin Wright for House of Cards. At least Robin ran to the stage, because the walks have been very long, but when she reached the podium she was out of breath and said this was totally unexpected and that she had no speech.
The next Golden Globe was for Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture, and the award went to Jared Leto for Dallas Buyers Club.
Emma Thompson came out with her shoes off and drink in hand to present the award for Best Screen Play, Motion Picture and the award went to Spike Jonze for Her. What a surprise win in this category. He was also played off the stage but got to thank a few folks on his list.
Next in line was the award for Best Actor in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy, and the Globe went to Andy Samberg for Brooklyn Nine-Nine. Another surprise win for the evening.
Best Foreign Language Film went to The Great Beauty, Italy before Tina and Amy came back with drinks in hand as they cut to Julia Louis-Dreyfus eating a well-stocked hot dog.
Jimmy Fallon and Melissa McCarthy came to the stage to announce the winner for Best Actor in a Mini-Series or TV Movie, and the winner was Michael Douglas for Behind the Candelabra. This is his 4th Golden Globe win and his eleventh nomination. He said the only reason Matt Damon didn’t win is because he wore more sequins.
Up next, Frozen took the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film, and Amy Poehler won Best Actress in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy for Parks and Recreation. She ran to the stage too, after stealing a few kisses from Bono. It was her 1st win and 3rd nomination. She said she never wins anything and couldn’t believe she won.
Tina and Amy return to throw to Emma Stone who introduced a tribute to Woody Allen for the Cecil B. DeMille Award.
Diane Keaton came out to continue his tribute and accept the Cecil B. DeMille Award for her friend Woody Allen. She went on a bit long and sang a quirky song in his honor, but you would think that Woody would want to speak for himself. I guess not.
Ben Affleck came to introduce the Best Director – Motion Picture Award, and the winner was Alfonso Cuaron for Gravity. Cuaron joked that his English is so bad that he once said to Sandra Bullock that he was going to give her herpes when he actually meant that he was going to give her an earpiece. He said it’s a true story.
Best TV Series, Musical or Comedy Award went to Brooklyn Nine-Nine and beating out The Big Bang Theory for another surprise win of the evening.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy went to Leonardo DiCaprio for The Wolf of Wall Street, and they said it wouldn’t win because of too many “F” bombs. Well, the naysayers were wrong. Leonardo also thanked Director Martin Scorsese for making the film and being his mentor.
Drew Barrymore announced the winner in the category of Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy and the Golden Globe went to American Hustle.
Leonardo DiCaprio returned to announce the award for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, Drama and the Golden Globe went to Cate Blanchett for Blue Jasmine. She thanked Woody Allen for calling her for this role rather than any of the other wonderful actresses in the room.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama was up next, and the Golden Globe went to Matthew McConaughey for Dallas Buyers Club. Dare I say it was another big surprise winner of the night.
Johnny Depp announced the major award of the evening, Best Motion Picture, Drama, and the winner was 12 Years a Slave. Director, Steve McQueen accepted the award and said he was a little bit in shock.
71st Annual Golden Globe Awards was a full evening and even though the ceremony was three hours long, the broadcast didn’t lag.
Congratulations to all the winners!
