2022 SAG AWARDS
The 2022 SAG Awards was a simulcast on TNT and TBS. It’s the 28th SAG Awards and was broadcast live from Barker Hangar in Santa Monica. Hamilton stars Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, and Daveed Diggs opened this year’s ceremony. But first, actors seated at the tables began by speaking to the camera about becoming a member of SAG and saying, “I am an actor.” When the camera came to Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, and Daveed Diggs, they also said “I am an actor,” but then came from the audience and took the stage to open the show. “The theme for tonight’s show is together again.” “Our COVID-compliant officers are the guards from Squid Game.”
The first category of the evening was Male Actor in a Supporting Role. The 2022 SAG Award went to Troy Kotsur for CODA. He signed his acceptance speech. He thanked Apple TV Plus for supporting deaf actors and thanked his wife and family. He especially thanked his wife for, “Reminding me to check my fly before walking on the red carpet.”
The Female Actor in a Supporting Role followed. The 2022 SAG Award went to Ariana DeBose for West Side Story. “It’s a beautiful cinematic experience.” “I am just thrilled to be among you. Thank you.”
The next category was Male Actor in Comedy Series. The nominees were Michael Douglas, Brett Goldstein, Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Jason Sudeikis. The 2022 SAG Award went to Jason Sudeikis for Ted Lasso. Jason was on camera to accept the award with the cast of Ted Lasso jumping for joy behind him. He thanked the writers, the production company, and his family.
Female Actor in a Comedy Series was up next. The nominees were Elle Fanning, Sandra Oh, Jean Smart, Juno Temple, and Hannah Waddingham. The 2022 SAG Award went to Jean Smart for Hacks. The Actor’s Statue was very heavy in her hand. “Actors … nobody gets us.” “We actually are the world’s oldest profession.” She thanked everyone for their support of the show. “Please everybody pray for peace and thank you, thank you, thank you.”
Ensemble in a Comedy Series was the next category in line and the nominees were The Great, Hacks, The Kominsky Method, Only Murders in the Building, and Ted Lasso. The 2022 SAG Award went to Ted Lasso. The cast came back on camera completely thrilled with the win. “Thank you to Apple and Warner Bros.” “Thank you so much, we wish we were there!” The nominees for Male Actor in a Drama Series were Brian Cox, Billy Crudup, Kieran Culkin, Lee Jung-Jae, and Jeremy Strong. The 2022 SAG Award went to Lee Jung-Jae for Squid Game. He brought an interpreter for his acceptance speech. “I did write something, but I don’t think I’m going to get to reading it.” “Thank you, Squid Game team.”
Fran Drescher, SAG/AFTRA National President took the stage to speak of new initiatives SAG has underway, before she addressed the accomplishments she said, “I would like to extend prayers to the people of Ukraine. “We are the largest entertainment union in the world.”
Female Actor in a Drama Series saw Jennifer Aniston, Jung Ho-Yeon, Elisabeth Moss, Sarah Snook, and Reese Witherspoon in competition for the award. The 2022 SAG Award went to Jung Ho-Yeon for Squid Game. She came to the stage shocked and a little teary-eyed. She also needed an interpreter. “First and foremost, thank you so much.” “I dreamed one day of becoming an actor. I just want to say thank you so much.” She ended her speech in English and said, “I love you Squid Game crew.”
Kate Winslet was unable to attend the ceremony, but she began the presentation of the Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award to Helen Mirren. “Women just get better with age.” Cate Blanchett continued the honors to Helen Mirren on stage and awarded the Lifetime Achievement Award to, “The one, the only, Dame Helen Mirren.”
Helen moved quickly to the stage and raised her hands in the air to the applause. She said her mantra of success is, “Be on time and don’t be an ass.” “It is you, you actors I want to thank.” “We love and admire each other’s work … we change clothes, and we suffer diarrhea.” “This is forty actors, thank you!”
The nominees for Ensemble in a Drama Series were The Handmaid’s Tale, The Morning Show, Squid Game, Succession, and Yellowstone. The 2022 SAG Award went to Succession. The first nomination and first win for Succession.
Up next was the Female Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series category. The 2022 SAG Award went to Kate Winslet for Mare of Easttown.
The In Memoriam segment was a pointed reminder of all the stars that passed on.
The category that followed was Male Actor in a Television Movie or Limited Series went to Michael Keaton for Dopesick. He was late to the stage because he was caught in the bathroom. He said, “Seriously, the line was very long.” “I am so blessed to do what I do.” He fought back tears about his nephew and sister who can re.
The nominees for Female Actor in a Leading Role were Jessica Chastain, Olivia Colman, Lady Gaga, Jennifer Hudson, and Nicole Kidman. The 2022 SAG Award went to Jessica Chastain for The Eyes of Tammy Faye. “Thank you, I am publicly stunned.” “It was a dream of mine to play Tammy Faye.” She encouraged fellow actors, “Keep going. You are one job away. I promise.”
Male Actor in a Leading Role Javier Bardem, Benedict Cumberbatch, Andrew Garfield, Will Smith, and Denzel Washington. The 2022 SAG Award went to Will Smith for King Richard. His first win and third nomination. “Wow! Yes, yes!” He thanked Venus Williams in the audience with him, and he praised the cast in the audience.
Lin-Manuel Miranda, Leslie Odom Jr, and Daveed Diggs returned for the final award, cast in a Motion Picture, and the 2022 SAG Award went to CODA. Marlee Matlin said, “I’m stunned. I’m stunned.” You are all our peers. We deaf actors have come a long way.” “This validates the fact that we deaf actors can work just like everybody else.”
