2020 Grammy Awards
The 2020 Grammy Awards was broadcast live on CBS from the Staples Center in Los Angeles. It was the 62nd Annual Grammy Awards ceremony hosted by Alicia Keys. Her second time at the helm.
The 2020 Grammy Awards kicked off with Lizzo who yelled, “Tonight is for Kobe” before belting out Cuz I Love You. Ballet dancers circled the stage as Lizzo came back with Truth Hurts. Her flute, Sasha performed too. She got a standing ovation, of course.
Alicia Keys came from behind the stage slowly and said, “Here we are together on music’s biggest night.” The mood was somber with the shock of Kobe Bryant’s death. “… But to be honest with you we are feeling crazy sad right now … the whole wide world has lost a hero.” “We’re literally standing here heartbroken in the house that Kobe Bryant built.”Alicia sent love and prayers out to his family. “They are in our spirit, our hearts and in our prayers.”
Alicia then began to sing, “It’s So Hard to Say Goodbye to Yesterday.” Boyz II Men joined her on stage and made it a very special moment. “We love you, Kobe.” Kobe’s jerseys were illuminated in the rafters.

Alicia continued, “The one thing that has the power to bring us all together is music.” “It’s the most healing thing in the world.”
She introduced Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani who performed their duet Nobody But You.
Alicia returned on the piano. “It’s been a hell of a week.” “I’m proud to be here with the artists and for the artists.” She wrote and performed a song about the nominees mentioning their names and songs.
Alicia asked, “Are you ready?” Billy Porter came to the stage, looking stunning as usual, and introduced the Jonas Brothers. They performed their hit 05.6 Minutes and What a Man Gotta Do.
The first award of the night was Best Pop Solo Performance, and the 2020 Grammy went to Lizzo. Go, girl! She fought back tears, “Thank you to the Academy.” “Today all of my little problems that I thought were as big as the world were gone.” “She was censored, and emotional. “Thank you so much for lifting me up. God bless you, thank you so much.”

Trevor Noah introduced Tyler, The Creator with Charlie Wilson and Boyz II Men who performed Earfquake and “New Magic Wand.
The next category was Best Country Duo/Group Performance, and the 2020 Grammy went Dan + Shay for Speechless.
Sheila E with FKA Twigs and Usher paid tribute to Prince and started with Red Corvette followed by When Doves Cry and Kiss.
Camila Cabello performed First Man. She came off the stage and tripped a bit but sang to her father who couldn’t hold back the tears as he got up and hugged her.
Tanya Tucker sang Bring My Flowers Now.
Best Comedy Album was the next category. The 2020 Grammy went to Dave Chappelle for Sticks & Stones. Dave wasn’t there and Tanya Tucker accepted the Grammy on his behalf.
Ariana Grande performed Imagine. She was joined by a full stage of dancers for 7 Rings and thank u, next.
Billie Ellish, with 16 nominations, and her beloved brother Finneas O’Connell performed when the party’s over.
Common took the stage to honor the historic collaboration of Run-DMC. and Aerosmith. Aerosmith performed “Living on the Edge” before Run-DMC. joined them for “Walk This Way.” Rev. Run and Darryl McDaniels burst through a wall of bricks on the stage and proceed to tear that song up. Rev. Run also held up Kobe’s shirt.
Best Rap Album was the next category. The 2020 Grammy went to Tyler, The Creator for “Igor.” His mother joined him crying her eyes out on the stage with him. “One, to my mother, you did a great job raising this guy.” He thanked his managers and said, you guys took a seed and you watered it.” He also thanked his fans and his label. He got played off during his acceptance speech.
Ellen DeGeneres came out to a great round of applause. She introduced Lil Nas X who performed his mega-hit “Old Town Road” with BTS, Billy Ray Cyrus, Diplo, and Mason Ramsey. They had fun with it and got a standing ovation.
Demi Lovato took the stage to perform her emotional song “Anyone.” She had a false start but recovered nicely and sang beautifully. The room stood and cheered.
Ava DuVernay introduced the tribute to Nipsey Hussle. DJ Khaled, John Legend, Meek Mill, Roddy Rich, Kirk Franklin, and YG all performed Higher in his honor. DJ Khaled ended with, “Rest in peace Nipsey Hussle. Rest in peace Kobe Bryant.” It was a powerful performance. Great job.
Alicia gave a shout out to P. Diddy for his Grammy win, President’s Merit Award for Industry Icon and congratulated Finneas, Billie’s brother who won a Grammy the day before.
Rosalía performed and she previously won the 2020 Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album.
Smokey Robinson with Little Big Town were the next presenters and they sang a little of “My Girl.” They presented the Grammy for Song of the Year. The 2020 Grammy went to Billie Eilish O’Connell and Finneas O’Connell for Bad Guy. Billie said, “I never thought this would happen in my whole life.” “I am so honored to be here.” She thanked her team and her mom and dad. Her brother was also shocked to win and said, “We still make music in our bedroom together. We still do that.”

Alicia performed “Underdog” on a center, a circular stage that raised her and her piano up toward the ceiling.
Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne were the next presenters for the category Best Rap Song Performance. The 2020 Grammy went to DJ Khaled featuring Nipsey Hussle and John Legend for Higher. “This is for Nipsey Hussle.” John Legend thanked Khaled and Nipsey and thanked his wife and family. “God bless.”
Sharon and Ozzy then introduced H.E.R and she performed “Sometimes”.
Bonnie Raitt sang Angel From Montgomery. She wrote and performed with John Prine. She congratulated him sitting in the audience on his Lifetime Achievement Award, and he stood as the audience applauded.
Gary Clark Jr. performed This Land.
The 2020 Grammy Awards In Memoriam segment started with Nipsey Hussle but showed that we have lost a lot of talent this past year.
The 2020 Best New Artist Grammy Award went to Billie Eilish. She said, “Two!” She thanked her team that tours with her and her fans. “all the other artists in this category. I love you all.”
John Legend paid tribute to Ken Ehrlich. John said Ken has been behind all the Grammy moments for the past 40 years. He won the Trustees Award. He requested music instead of an acceptance speech. The song he chose was The Body Electric.
L.L. Cool Jay presented the nominations for Album of the Year. The 2020 Grammy went to Billie Eilish for When We All Fall Asleep, Where Do We Go? She was shocked and said she thought Ariana Grande should have won. Her brother ended with, “We stand up her confused and grateful.”
The 2020 Grammy Award for Record of Year went Billie Eilish for Bad Guy. It was Billie’s night! She swept the 2020 Grammy Awards, and when she won Record of the Year, she didn’t have anything else to say.
