Tisha Campbell and Tichina Arnold return to co-host the 2019 Soul Train Awards for the second time and co-produced this year’s ceremony.

The 2019 Soul Train Awards aired live for the first time from the Orleans Arena in Las Vegas. The broadcast opened with the ladies in full costume and dancing up a storm to Janet Jackson hits. Tisha said she got a cramp from the performance and pulled out an inhaler. They broke into Rhythm Nation and got a standing ovation in the end.

Tisha said, “Welcome to the 2019 Soul Train Awards” to kick off the ceremony and Tichina said, “You can clap.”

Keyshia Cole and Tank were the first presenters. The category, Best R&B Soul Female Artist, and the 2019 Soul Train Award went to HER. “Oh, I’m a little bit nervous.” “Oh, my God, I wasn’t expecting this.” She shouted out to the other ladies in the category and said, “When one of us wins, we all win.” “Soul Train is more than just an awards show … it’s everyone that came before us.”

Tichina Arnold promoted her foundation called We Win in support of the Lupus Foundation and thanked Walmart for a very generous donation to the cause.

The next performer was Sir performed Hair Down and John Redcorn.

Tisha introduced K. Michelle’s performance. She sang The Rain beautifully. She ended her performance by saying, “We love you Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis.”

Tiana Major9 and EATHGANG performed Collide from the soundtrack of Queen & Slim by Lena Waithe.

Best Gospel/Inspirational Award went to Kirk Franklin. “I want to say thank you to my beautiful wife and I want to say thank you to my beautiful children.” He got very inspirational in his acceptance speech. “God did not call you to be microwavable.” “You’re time is coming.”

The ladies dressed as Jimmy Jam and Terri Lewis to introduce another song tribute to the five-time Grammy Award-winning duo that Tisha and Tichina credited for being responsible for the “Black baby boom of the ’90s.” The ladies brought three of Philly’s finest to the stage, Boyz II Men. They started their set with Tender Love followed by On Bended Knee. Wow, they killed it! The audience stood, sang and cheered through the whole performance, including Jimmy and Terri.

The next award went to the Best New Artist. The 2019 Soul Train Award went to Summer Walker. She timidly accepted her award.

Wale performed On Chill with Jeremih and then went into Sue Me with Kelly Price. Kelly’s powerful voices were incredible.

Queen Naija performed Good Morning Text and Pink Sweat$ performed Honesty.

Kirk Franklin returned to lead the tribute to Yolanda Adams and award her with the Lady of Soul Award. After her video tribute, Kirk called Yolanda to the stage to receive her Lady of Soul Award. Kirk is much shorter than Yolanda he comically tried to jump up and kiss her. “I’m passionate about everything I do.” “No matter how high you are you still have to deal.” She told Jimmy Jam and Terri Lewis that she loves them and she thanked her daughter Taylor Crawford, “You are my light.” “I love you so much.

Yolanda Adams returned to perform. She started with Victory followed by My Open Heart. Needless to say, Yolanda shook the building with her performance.

Tisha promoted the Wiley Center that supports those with autism and announced another very generous donation from Walmart.

Luke James performed All Of Your Love just before the Legend Award was presented to the prolific duo, Jimmy Jam, and Terri Lewis.

Baby Face came to present the Legend Award to Jimmy Jam and Terri Lewis. He said he thought he could be cool and get through the introduction with his sunglasses on, but he relented and put his reading glasses on.
Baby Face credited the team of Jimmy Jam and Terri Lewis with producing, “Timeless pieces of art that resonate from generation to generation.” The list of performers they’ve worked with, written for, or produced is truly endless.

When the duo came to the stage to accept their awards the audience cheered wildly. Jimmy said he wanted to thank his family because they suffered through enough and he thanked his wife for her support. He also thanked Terry for being his partner for all these years. When Terri took the mike he also thanked his wife and his kids. He said he likes to call this award the Living Legend Award. “Thank you for listening.”

Jimmy Jam and Terri Lewis started their performance section with Optimistic by Sounds of Blackness followed by Just Be Good to Me by Deborah Cox, Tell Me If You Still Care by the S.O.S. Band, and Saturday Love by Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle.

Sounds of Blackness remind us what soul is with performance of “Optimistic,” Mary Davis and Abdul Ra’oof of the S.O.S Band perform a medley of “Just Be Good To Me” and “Tell Me If You Still Care,” Alexander O’Neal and Cherrelle get us on our feet with “Saturday Love,” and Morris Day turns up with “Jungle Love” and “The Bird” with Jerome Benton for the Legend Tribute of Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis!

Morris Day came out and killed it with his performance of Jungle Love. His sidekick Jerome did not disappoint and came out to hold the mirror and dance with Morris.

Morris Day and The Time ended the set with The Bird and the audience went crazy, and to end the set Jerome came back and dropped the mike! Yes!

Tisha and Tichina closed the show after that performance. There was really nothing else to be said.
