The program opened with a spoof of Globe nominee La La Land as Jimmy started singing from his limousine and was joined by lots of cameos from several actors, including Ryan Reynolds and Justin Timberlake.
Jimmy took the stage after the video to huge applause and said the teleprompter was down. His first joke of the evening.
Welcome to the Golden Globes, “Where America still honors the popular vote.” He said lots of people will be thanked tonight, but “No one’s going to thank O.J.”
He closed his monologue with, “It’s the biggest party of the year,” and introduced the first presenters of the evening.
Ryan Reynolds and Emma Stone came out of the audience to present the nominees for Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in Any Motion Picture. The Golden Globe went to Aaron Taylor-Johnson for Nocturnal Animals.
Best Actor in a TV Series, Drama was next and the Golden Globe went to Billy Bob Thornton for Goliath.
Jimmy came back and said he talked to Maria Carey and she said his monologue was sabotaged as he introduced Hugh Grant.
Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series — Musical or Comedy was next and the Golden Globe went to Tracee Ellis Ross, Black-ish.
Tracee said, “This is for all of the women, women of color.” She also said Anthony was the most wonderful husband ever and thanked the cast and her family.
Best Television Series — Musical or Comedy was next and the Golden Globe went to Atlanta. Donald Glover accepted the award to a rousing standing ovation. He was shocked and grateful as he thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press and all the actors and actresses on the show.
Ahmir “Questlove” Thompson was the Dee Jay as Jimmy introduced Lorenzo Soria, the president of the Hollywood Foreign Press. He said, “Don’t worry I am not going to explain all the rules.” He kept his promise and delivered a short but significant description of the mission of the Hollywood Foreign Press Association.
The next award was for Best Actress in a Limited Series. The Golden Globe went to Sarah Paulson for the People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story.
Best Limited Series or TV Movie was next and the Globe went to The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. The whole cast took the stage to loud applause and a standing ovation.
Best Performance by an Actor in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series, or Motion Picture Made for Television went to Hugh Laurie for The Night Manager.
Carrie Underwood and Sting introduced the nominees for Best Original Score and the Golden Globe went to Justin Hurwitz for La La Land. They also introduced the nominees for the Best Original Song, and the Globe went to City of Star‘ in La La Land.
Jimmy came back again to introduce Michael Keaton. He presented the nominees for Best Supporting Actress in a Motion Picture. The Golden Globe went to Viola Davis for Fences. Viola said it’s her fifth nomination. She joked, “I took all the pictures went to the luncheon.” She also thanked Denzel Washington for being a great actor and director and saying to trust him.
Cuba Gooding Jr. yelled at the audience twice to sit down as he presented the nominees for Best Performance by an Actress in a Supporting Role in a Series, Limited Series. The Golden Globe went to Olivia Colman for The Night Manager.
Amy Schumer and Goldie Hawn presented together so cute. Goldie made mistakes and Amy fixed them. The category was Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical and the Golden Globe went Ryan Gosling for La La Land. He mentioned that he was filming while his lady love Eva Mendes was going through some very hard times and that she made it possible for him to do the film.
Best Screenplay for a Motion Picture went to Damien Chazelle for La La Land.
Kristin Wiig and Steve Carell were the next presenters for Best Animated Film. They both told tragic childhood (made up) stories before they announced the nominees. The Golden Globe went to Zootopia.
The Globes took a moment to pay tribute to Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher. It was a short video, but enough to make you cry.
Ellie won for France in the category of Motion Picture Foreign Language.
Best Actor in a Limited Series or TV Movie went to Tom Hiddleston for The Night Manager.
Best Actress in a TV Series, Drama was the next category and the Golden Globe went to Clarie Foy for The Crown.
Best TV Series, Drama went to The Crown. That was a surprise. They were also the first group to be played off the stage during their acceptance speech.
Viola Davis told a rather long story as she prepared to honor Meryl Streep before she said, “You make me proud to be an artist.” After the career highlights video, Meryl took the stage. The room cheered and gave her a long standing ovation. She said, “You’ll have to forgive me. I lost my voice.” She thanked the Hollywood Foreign Press. She made a joke aimed at Donald when she said we are among the most disliked groups, “Hollywood, foreigners and the press.”
Then she got very serious when she referenced when Donald made a joke about a disabled reporter. “Disrespect invites disrespect and violence invites violence.”
She spoke for quite some time, but closed with, “We should all be very proud of the work Hollywood honors here tonight.”
The next category was Best Director and the Golden Globe Award went to Damien Chazelle for La La Land.
Best Actor in a TV Series, Musical or Comedy was next and the Golden Globe went to Donald Glover for Atlanta.
The audience looked like they were having a great time socializing. Especially when Matt Damon came out to present the nominees for Best Actress in a Motion Picture and had to say, “Hello everyone back at the bar the show’s back on.” The Golden Globe went to Emma Stone for La La Land.
Brad Pitt received loud applause when took the stage to described Best Picture nominee Moonlight.
It was a big night for La La Land as the movie won again, this time for Best Motion Picture, Musical or Comedy.
Best Actor in a Motion Picture was next and the Golden Globe Award went to Casey Affleck for Manchester By the Sea.
Leonardo DiCaprio was the next presenter for Best Actress in a Motion Picture. The Golden Globe Award went to Isabelle Huppert for Elle. What a big surprise. The room erupted.
Sylvester Stallone and Carl Weathers announced the big award of the evening for Best Picture Motion Picture, Drama. The Golden Globe went to Moonlight. Another surprise.
La La Land has a lot to celebrate.
